The Kingkiller Chronicle author Patrick Rothfuss and Grim Oak Press are creating a new imprint called Underthing Press. Underthing’s first project is a reprinting of the Hugo Award-winning graphic novel Digger: The Complete Collection by Ursula Vernon.
“It all started when I gave away my copy of the Digger Omnibus to a friend, then discovered I couldn’t buy another one,” Rothfuss said in a statement. “It breaks my heart when I learn that a book I love has gone out of print. I’ve always daydreamed about starting my own imprint, and I couldn’t think of a better place to start than by making a brilliant, Hugo Award-winning comic available to the public again.”
Underthing Press’ Digger project will include softcover and hardcover editions and a limited number of copies signed by Vernon and Rothfuss, the latter of whom has also written a new foreword for the book. The crowdfunding campaign for the reprint will begin on February 2, 2022.
Digger: The Complete Collection is only the first project that Rothfuss and Grim Oak Press owner Shawn Speakman have in mind. “We’re in talks with several folks to bring their books back into print, or in other cases, to make a beautiful specialty edition of a book I particularly love,” Rothfuss said. “And I’ll have my own projects too, of course. I’m finally ready to publish a project I’ve been working on for years with friend and Illustrator Nate Taylor. It’s an illustrated version of The Boy that Loved the Moon.”
If you’re interested in learning more about Underthing Press and are reading this right when it publishes, Rothfuss and Speakman will be on Rothfuss’ Twitch channel today at 2:00 PM CST to share more about the imprint.
